CLEAR: An Answer to Airport Security

CLEAR: An Answer to Airport Security

Airport security. Just the thought of it can send a shudder down some travelers’ spines. Immediately your mind imagines long lines where you shuffle through like cattle anxiously checking your watch to make sure you aren’t going to miss your flight. Add in traveling with kids and all of a sudden, you are not only entertaining your littles but also trying to maintain your sanity as you slowly progress through the line.

Trust me, as an avid traveler with 3 little kids, I’ve been there. I’ve walked up to security and realized I now had 30 minutes or more to wrangle my kiddos while keeping them (and in turn everyone around us) happy. That’s why I decided to give CLEAR a try. Knowing we had several flights ahead of us over the next few months, I decided to do the trial and see how much I liked it.

The Setup

CLEAR is super easy to set up. I simply headed to the CLEAR website and created my profile, which is tied to my email address and a valid form of identification (US Driver’s License, US Passport, US Passport Card, US-issued Permanent Resident Card, State Issued ID, or US Military ID. All forms of identification must be valid, unexpired, not amended, and have a photo.) This entire process took me less than 15 minutes.

Then, on our next trip to the airport, we stopped by CLEAR to finish the setup process. I spent 7 minutes with a very helpful and pleasant CLEAR employee who walked me through everything. They scanned my fingerprints and retinas and snapped a quick photo of me.

The Cost

Typically, a CLEAR membership costs $179 a year. But, as a Delta Skymiles member, CLEAR costs $99 per year, so be sure to include your Skymiles information when you set up your account. Additionally, if you follow this link, you’ll get 2 months FREE (please note, I’ll also get 2 months free if you follow it – so thank you in advance!). Children under 18 can use the CLEAR lane for free when accompanied by a CLEAR family member. Kids do not need to enroll. You can also add on another adult for $50 per year.

CLEAR also works with Pre-Check, this saves you even more time if you are already enrolled in Pre-Check!

The Results

My 3 daughters and I just took 5 flights over a period of 12 days. We were able to use CLEAR at all of the airports except one. (To see a list of where CLEAR is currently located head over here.)

We approached airport security in Denver, the wait time was listed as 60 minutes, but we spent less than 2 minutes at CLEAR and were through security in a total of 10 minutes. I simply gave the awesome CLEAR agent my boarding pass, scanned my fingerprints and she then scanned the kids’ boarding passes and we were on our way. No lines. No waiting. No trying to entertain my kids as we slowly edged closer to the front of the lines. My daughters were even raving about how lucky we were to have CLEAR.

A happy (and sane) mama traveling solo with 3 kids under the age of 8? That’s a win for sure. Pretty sure you can’t put a price tag on that, can you?

It is worth noting, CLEAR does not change the security process, it simply improves the efficiency of passing through the airport security lines.

We’ll be keeping CLEAR once our free trial is up and encouraging all of our friends and family who travel often to grab it as well. The time saved is well worth the $99 a year for us. You should definitely give it a try as well!
