October 29, 2020 Weather Delay Update
We would like to bring to your attention a few items of importance as we move through fall into the winter season. Please take this opportunity to review your school communications preferences in Skyward Family Access. It is critical that this information is up-to-date and accurate in the event of a weather closure or delay. Click here to learn how to update your communications preferences.
Weather Delay Change
Due to later start times for the 2020-21 school year, we will employ 90-minute weather delays when necessary instead of a 2-hour delay. In such an instance, bus pick up, student drop off, and school start times will be pushed back exactly 90 minutes. School start times for a 90-minute delay will be as follows:
VHS: 9:26 a.m.
Middle Schools: 9:49 a.m.
Elementary Schools: 10:45 a.m.
Morning bus times will be approximately 90 minutes later than their normal run times. For example, if your bus pick-up is normally 6:55 a.m., the adjusted time would be approximately 8:25 a.m. An inclement weather delay will affect start times for in-person and remote learners. Dismissal times will remain the same.
Weather Related Safety Protocol
The Superintendent, Director of Transportation, Director of Safety and Security, and Director of Maintenance are all in communication when adverse weather presents itself. These individuals check conditions by driving the roads, monitoring weather channels, watching radar, speaking with weather experts, and communicating with multiple others in the county.
Weather related decisions are made as early as 5:00AM with 5:30AM being the ultimate deadline. Parents will decide on the safety of conditions for their teen drivers and/or themselves. If our buses are able to travel safely to our buildings, we will be in school.
Parents and guardians will be notified of weather delays/school closings via our School Messenger notification service. This service will automatically call the phone number provided to us at registration and that is on file with your child's school. It is vital that this information is up-to-date and accurate. to review your contact information in Skyward Family Access.
We also encourage our families to obtain updates on the status of school by listening to local radio stations, visiting our district social media pages and school websites.
We understand that we will have some who agree and some who do not agree with our decision. We kindly ask that you do not call the school office or the central office to voice your opinion on the decision that was made.
Early dismissal decisions will be made with the same considerations, and by the same methods. In case of an early dismissal, the schools will follow the early dismissal plans chosen by parents at registration. Please discuss the plan with your child so they know exactly what to do. In the event of an early dismissal, school personnel will be working together caring for students to ensure a safe dismissal. Unless you have an emergency situation, please do not call the school office during an early dismissal.
